Film Analysis Part 3

Image
The movie I chose to analyze a scene from is Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The clip begins with a tracking shot of Tom Cruise dressed as an army general while walking swiftly  down a hallway. We can assume that the setting is some sort of protected government army base, based off the other soldiers and police men walking around in their respectable attire. We see an over the shoulder shot of Tom nodding his head to a man who is walking in the opposing direction down the hallway, which helps to establish a relationship through blocking. In the background, we hear non diegetic suspenseful music, which can help the audience to assume that the scene's climax is approaching. We then see a medium long shot of a group of police men looking confus...

Film Analysis Part 2

Image
The movie I chose to analyze a scene from is The Matrix. The scene opens on a very fast paced speed, with a close up shot of a man in a helicopter saying "We're under attack!" This sets the tone for the audience, to prepare them for a fighting scene. Loud, exciting music is playing, which is non diegetic. This helps to support the events happening in the clip, and to match the tone of intensity. The setting is in a large city on the roof a tall building, which correlates with the genre of action. The duration of shots is very quick, to encapsulate the extent of  the high paced fighting occurring. The costumes of the protagonists and antagonists are very similar, which are dressed in an all black, mysterious attire. The majority of the characters have shades on their face, which adds to the mysterious mood and feel of the movie. We then see a dissolve/ fade out transition of the man in the helicopter morphing into a different character dressed in a suit and shades. The use...

Film Analysis Part 1

Image
The movie I chose to analyze a clip from, is Avengers: Infinity War. The clip begins with a medium close up shot of our main antagonist, Thanos. There is no music, but instead loud footsteps of Thanos walking through the forest. It is an open frame, so anyone can enter or exit the frame. We can also hear an accentuation of the wind rustling through the trees and the heavy breathing of Wanda. This lack of music creates an intense mood, as we are waiting to see what happens next. Thanos' makeup is a bright purple all over his body, and his costume is very superhero/villian like. This goes along well with the genre of action. The setting is in a forest on Earth, which contrasts greatly with the futuristic attire of our characters. As Wanda is on the floor, Thanos and Wanda exchange dialogue which follows with suspenseful music. We then see a low angle shot of Thanos, from Wanda's point of view. This puts him in the superiority over Wanda, and adds to the effect of good vs evil. We...

Production Update #1

Production Update #1     I currently have a good percentage of my production process completed for the Final Project. I have done all of my planning, including storyboarding, scriptwriting, choosing my cast, and creating a preferred timeline for myself. For my storyboard, I created rough sketches of the main scenes in my opening sequence. This will help me have a much smoother shooting session whereas I will already have a good idea of what I am filming. It was also very beneficial of me to create my script, so me and the other actors will not be confused during filming. With choosing my actors, I will not have to be looking around last minute for who will help me with my project. I am now ready to begin filming. With all of these components completed in the beginning of the production process, I should have a smooth shooting experience.

Title Research Analysis

Image
Title Research Analysis     The summary I chose to analyze was Captain Marvel (2019). I feel that the title does a good job at giving away the genre of the project, which is action. It sets up a theme of good and evil with the contrast of characters and colors, which correlates well with the genre. The setting of the title being in space with the metal and rigid font conveys a feeling of armor or spaceships. It sets up a tone of excitement and supernaturalism, which is very common in action. My selection of this summary will be quite different to how I am planning on using titles in my opening sequence. My film will stray more towards adventure and mission themes types, as this summary has a very superhero feel. I will effectively use titles to help convey meaning in my opening sequence, by using adventurous fonts and mysterious styles. This way, my audience will not get confused and think that they are about to watch a superhero action film.

Script

Script Scene 1: Breaking News - Nichole: "BREAKING NEWS! It has been reported that the prized Peacock of Portugal is still missing, and a reward for 3.5 million dollars has been placed in anticipation of it's safe return. If you have any information leading up to it's current location please dial the number on the screen." Scene 2: Man in the Room - Albert: "Psht. They're not gettin' this." *turns off TV, gets up and walks away* Scene 3: Mission is a Go - Halle: *reads message on smart watch* "Alright I'm going in." Scene 4-6: *no dialogue, Halle is quietly making her way down the dark hallway* Scene 7: She's Spotted - Halle: *drops key on ground that opens suspicious door* - Albert: "HEY WHO'S THERE?" *in a loud voice* Scene 8: Mission Accomplished - Halle: *enters the room quickly and spots a green glow* "Yes. Preproduction Plan

Image
Pre Production Plan     I plan on using a plethora of materials when filming my Final Project. The camera I plan on using is my Canon Rebel T2i. I already own this camera, so I will not have to worry about gaining access to it. I enjoy taking quality pictures on this camera, so I am sure that it will be able to serve as a good camera to film on. A few props I plan on including are cars, flashlights, siren, guns/lasers, swords, helmets, or even warning labels. The usage of cars can help add to the fast-paced excitement aspect of the film, with flashlights and sirens adding to the visual and sound affect. Depending on where I decide to set my film in, lasers or guns could be necessary to portray getting ready to battle. Warning labels and any other visual signs could help to add suspense and tension for the characters situation. I plan on finding all of these materials in my house, or DIY-ing the ones that I do not have. The costumes are very important in action movies, a...

Audiences and Institutions

Audiences and Institutions         Based off of my genre convention research, the normal targeted audience for films within the genre of action are males aged from 18-34 years old. This is due to fast paced thrills and intense action. Although this is the primary audience, the secondary audience often extents to a larger and more mature crowd of 35-55+, which is often associated with blockbuster franchises. Males tend to be more drawn to the aspects of action, for the excitement and special effects that it offers. However, although origins of action are more skewed towards men, modern films have been showing an uprise in female engagement as well. For my film, I would like my targeted audience to be much more broad, and appealing to all sorts of people. I want both men and females to have an equal interest in my film. I also want there to be a wide spectrum of ages, so preferably a more family friendly film. This way, I will be able to get maximum input an...

Genre Conventions for Final Project Blog Post

Image
Genre Conventions for Final Project Blog Post I have selected the genre of action. This genre originates from the 1910's, where there were "comic chase" films and Douglas Fairbanks' swashbucklers. At this time, we relied  mainly on  western films to convey an action type of feel which made these genres overlap. From the 1960's-70's, the  genre of   action  started to mold into  its  current state. The James Bond Franchise and many others  helped  to gain  its  popularity and purpose. In the 1980's, we entered 'The Golden Age' .  Its  popularity began to skyrocket, and it started to become classified by witty protagonists. We consider the 1900's- present the modern age of action. This era helped to introduce higher budgets for improved special effects such  as  Terminator  2 and  paved the way for many more successful  action  films.  A few  key landmark films include The Great Train ...
