Film Analysis Part 1
The movie I chose to analyze a clip from, is Avengers: Infinity War. The clip begins with a medium close up shot of our main antagonist, Thanos. There is no music, but instead loud footsteps of Thanos walking through the forest. It is an open frame, so anyone can enter or exit the frame. We can also hear an accentuation of the wind rustling through the trees and the heavy breathing of Wanda. This lack of music creates an intense mood, as we are waiting to see what happens next. Thanos' makeup is a bright purple all over his body, and his costume is very superhero/villian like. This goes along well with the genre of action. The setting is in a forest on Earth, which contrasts greatly with the futuristic attire of our characters. As Wanda is on the floor, Thanos and Wanda exchange dialogue which follows with suspenseful music. We then see a low angle shot of Thanos, from Wanda's point of view. This puts him in the superiority over Wanda, and adds to the effect of good vs evil. We then see a closeup shot of his Infinity Gauntlet, which with editing and special effects is made to seem as if Thanos is bringing Vision back to life. These special effects add visual excitement for the audience, and helps to draw them in. A fade in transition is used to introduce Vision into the scene as he is brought back to life. The utilization of the fade in helps his appearance to be very seamless. As Vision appears, the volume and the pitch of the music begins to increase to show a climax in the scene. Wanda attempts to stop Thanos from retrieving the infinity stone from Vision, but then we see a tracking shot of Thanos shoving her over as she flies across the screen and lands on the ground. This tracking shot helps the audience to see the extent of how hard Thanos had pushed Wanda away. We then see an over the shoulder shot and POV editing of Thanos prying an infinity stone out of Vision's forehead, and then from Vision's point of view. This helps us to see both character's expressions and also helps to establish a negative relationship with blocking. The scene then ends with a close up shot of un-alived and colorless Vision lying on the forest floor. This helps the audience to come to the realization that Vision is in fact dead.
Comparison:
This film compares to the project I've been working on, with suspenseful aspects and the comparison of good vs evil. I am planning on adding suspenseful music at the appropriate moments, such as when the main character is trying to quietly enter the locked room. This will help the audience to feel the tension, and be curious on what is to come next. There will also be a similarity of good vs evil, as the person protecting the hidden artifact will be the antagonist, while the person trying to retrieve it is the protagonist. This will help to encapsulate the overall genre of action.
