Film Analysis Part 3
The movie I chose to analyze a scene from is Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The clip begins with a tracking shot of Tom Cruise dressed as an army general while walking swiftly down a hallway. We can assume that the setting is some sort of protected government army base, based off the other soldiers and police men walking around in their respectable attire. We see an over the shoulder shot of Tom nodding his head to a man who is walking in the opposing direction down the hallway, which helps to establish a relationship through blocking. In the background, we hear non diegetic suspenseful music, which can help the audience to assume that the scene's climax is approaching. We then see a medium long shot of a group of police men looking confused down the hallway. A POV shot helps to show us they have noticed a glitch down the hallways, which leads to a hidden coverup of a separate entrance. The loudness and pitch of the music begins to increase, as it matches the increased high paced suspense of the clips. We then see a jump cut to Tom running very quickly down a dark, enclosed tunnel, as if he is attempting to escape from someone or something. This tunnel is a close frame, as no one is appeared to be able to enter or exit the frame besides Tom. Once Tom exceeds the end of this tunnel, he composes himself and yells in at the guards in a foreign language to shut the gate. As he approaches the outside of this building, he then quickly changes both his hair and his costume to appear as someone totally different. He rips off his fake mustache, lets his hair loose, flips his uniform jacket inside out, and throws on some reading glasses to appear as a common citizen. The affect of fitting into the setting around him is crucial, so he does not get caught by whoever he is running from. Once Tom succeeds in changing his appearance the music in the background begins to lower in loudness, pitch, and suspense. However, it is then replaced by the sound of loud bombs blowing up the building he had just exited. This time, these sounds are diegetic and on screen as it is coming from the scene events itself. The clip then concludes with a long shot tracking shot of Tom running for his life away from this blown up building.
