Media Reflection #5
Media Reflection #5
Now that I have become a creator of a film myself, there are a few viewpoints that I had that may have been adjusted. In a film, I feel that it is a very important responsibility that creators work to represent the different groups correctly. One group represented in my film is women. In action films, the main character and the antagonist often tend to be big, strong, intimidating men. However, I wanted to flip this narrative, by casting women for both of those roles in my film. We can depict the antagonist in my film as a sneaky, mysterious woman as we are never able to see her face. This creates a state of wonder for the audience, and adds some suspense and desire to identify her. In addition, my main character (me), is shown a swift and put together individual, shown through body language and costume. As the creator, I wanted to take the time to be sure that both women were represented as strong characters, and not timid ones in my film.
My consumption habits when it comes to large studio content or independent works tend to lean more towards action, mystery, or even romance. With my film being action, I would say that I created a film that is more related to the content I consume. I enjoy watching action, due to all of the excitement and anticipation that is always occurring. I found that it would be a much easier process to make a film that I know I would want to watch. I wanted to imagine myself in my audience's shoes, and the best way to achieve this was creating an action film.In addition, my skills as a filmmaker have definitely developed during this project. Although I've had some past experiences with editing and creating short clips, there are many aspects that I pay closer attention to and are more comfortable with at this stage in my film. One skill that I know how to utilize now is using a green screen. This way, I was able to change the background of one of my scenes to become a more appropriate setting for my film. Another skill I have acquired is recognizing the importance of cinematography in shots. I now know when it is necessary to use things such as closeup shots to emphasize importance on an
object or event in my film.Furthermore, I feel that I have grown a greater connection and deeper relationship with media throughout this project. I now pay closer attention to fine details in movies, and I have a better idea as to why directors chose to do certain things they do. Almost every detail in a film has a reason, even the smallest things. Through creating my own opening sequence, I have a greater appreciation for media and filmmakers. I now get a glimpse of how much planning, time, and dedication it really takes to make a successful movie come together. Although it takes much time and dedication, becoming a creator of a film is all worth it once you have become satisfied with your final product and get to share it with others.
