Semester 1 Reflection

Semester 1 Reflection

Reflecting on my progress in the Media Studies course, I feel as though my relationship with media has changed drastically. Prior to taking this course, I did not think much about what really goes into making and producing a film. I would just watch a movie almost mindlessly, and my brain would be tricked into the idea that everything just almost magically falls into place. However, after learning and working through units on aspects such as cinematography, mise en scene, editing, sound, and much more, my eyes and understanding have begun to open on the reality of media.

I did not realize how much the little components can make a big difference in a film. Small things such as costume, composition, and even different types of shots can all help to create and convey all kinds of meaning. When watching a movie now, my brain explores and recognizes these little details so much more than I would have before. When outside of class, it is fun for me to pick out these components that I learn in Media Studies while watching a film. I feel as if I have an inside view on what’s going through a director’s or producers’ mind throughout the film. This is a big reason why I really enjoy this course, because it is very interactive and not just full of paperwork. Also, opinions on why the producer chose to incorporate something in a film can be justified, so if you can explain your reasoning well enough then you should be on the right track!

In addition, I feel quite ready for this second semester. I have been able to keep straight As in this class thus far, so I am not very worried for what is to come. Regarding the final project, I feel as if I have been able to get gooexperience and practice with my table partner(s). We have had the opportunity to film various clips, edit them together, and take countless pictures. I have learned a lot this semester, including the importance of taking all footage in landscape. This was a big adjustment for me and many people, as I am quite used to taking photos vertically. Due to this, I feel confident that I will be able to perform well on the Final Project. Regarding the Paper Exam, I also feel that I will be able to have high success levels on this. I have always been one that has a strength in writing, amy thoughts start flowing when I'm in the right mindset. With all the writing practice we have done in class so far, I feel very prepared that I am able to successfully write a response in the time limit for this exam.

To conclude, I feel that my relationship with media has changed a lot throughout the entirety of this course. I now see the little things that cinematographers implement into films, and I also see how groups of people are represented differently. Due to this, I feel confident that I will be able to successfully perform on both the Final Project and the Paper Exam.
