 Media Reflection #4: 

When it comes to groups of people being represented in a film, I feel that it is a very important responsibility to be able to correctly and accurately convey them. For my film Opening Project new month, I want to be sure that I am able to successfully do this, regardless of which group of people I need to represent. I feel that all groups of people have the right to be represented correctly when creating media products. Media can have a huge influential impact on society and its norms. Media tends to spread false, under, or even overexaggerated information about people, so it is very crucial that we don’t contribute to this. 

In addition, I feel that other filmmakers have both represented groups both well and poorly in the past. For example, I feel that the film ‘Black Panther’ had a positive reflection and representation for African Culture. It depicts African society as powerful, advanced, technological, intelligent, and so much more. I feel that this film had a strong message of empowerment for this group of people and its culture. This film is loved by many, which is a great reflection of the positive impact that it has had. However, a film that I feel had a negative representation on groups of people is the animated ‘Peter Pan’ film. At times, this film would depict Native Americans in a negative way by using the stereotypical term of “redskins” to address them. To many, this can represent Native Americans in a lowly and offensive light. Therefore, I feel that the filmmakers could have done a better job without generalizing this group of people in such a way by being more careful and considerate of how they address and categorize these groups. 

To conclude, I feel that representing groups of people in the correct way is a highly important responsibility for all filmmakers. It is good to be conscious of other cultures, beliefs, races, or any other group that media tends to portray. Being considerate of these factors could even help to reduce backlash against a filmmaker or their creation. Therefore, I will work to the best of my ability to correctly represent groups on my upcoming project.

Semester 1 Reflection

Semester 1 Reflection Reflecting on my progress in the Media Studies course, I feel as though my relationship with media has changed  drastically. Prior to taking this course, I did not thi nk much about what really goes into making and producing a film. I would just watch a movie  almost mindlessly , and my b rain would be tricked into the idea that everything just  almost magically  falls into place. However, after learning and working  through  units on aspects such as cinematography, mise  en  scene, editing, sound, and much more,  my eyes and understanding have begun to open on the reality of media.    I did not realize how much the little components can make  a big difference  in a film.  Small things  such as costume, composition, and even  different types  of  shots can all help to create and convey all kinds of meaning.
