Media Reflection #3
The last two movies I have watched were Spiderman Homecoming and Five Feet Apart. Spiderman Homecoming was made by Marvel Studios and Columbia Pictures, and Five Feet Apart was made by CBS Films, Wayfarer Studios, and Welle Entertainment. Marvel Studio's parent company is The Walt Disney Studios, known for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It includes many popular series such as Iron Man, Avengers, Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy, and many more. Columbia Picture's parent company is Sony Pictures Entertainment, and it's known for a much more diverse range of film productions, such as Ghostbusters, Taxi Driver, Men in Black, Spider-Man etc. CBS Film’s parent company is Paramount Global. It is known for producing mid-budget films such as Extraordinary Measures, The Back-up Plan, Faster, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen etc. Wayfarer Studios is an independent production studio, known for social impact projects such as It Ends with Us. Welle Entertainment is also an independent production company is known for content pertaining women and girls such as The Woman King and Otherhood. These are only a few examples of many successful film companies that produce movies today.
Furthermore, I feel that my personal consumption habits concerning movies tend to vary. More often, I tend to reach for films that are popular or trending among my peers rather than the company it was produced by. For example, if someone or multiple people were to recommend a movie to me, it would most likely heighten the chances of me deciding to check it out. This is not specifically because I know it was created by a larger or smaller company, but because I have received good reviews on it that make the film seem worthy to interact with. I have chosen to watch many independent films that have been recommended to me, and many times I have enjoyed them. I do not feel as if the size of a company always contributes to the quality of a film. However, most movies that receive good reviews do tend to come from larger companies, so this could play a role in my consumption habits of interacting more with media that is produced by larger companies rather than independent ones.
Regarding my media consumption habits, I am usually not aware of what company produces the films that I watch most of the time. I never tend to let solely the company who made it sway my opinion on whether to watch the film or not. Pertaining to the future, I will try to be more conscious of who makes the content I chose to consume. This course has helped to open my eyes more in the movie making realm in many aspects. The company makes the things we consume can at times be a very important factor to consider. I have become more familiar with companies that I may not have given attention to in the past, and this will help me to be more aware of my habits in media consumption in the coming future.
